March 18 and 19, 1811. After a failed third attempt to invade Portugal, French troops, under the leadership of Marshal André Massena and defending the ideals of Napoleon Bonaparte, sought to leave Portugal. On their way, after the clashes in Redinha (Pombal) and Foz de Arouce (Lousã), they passed the Mucela Bridge, a place that was the scene of some skirmishes between the Portuguese-British army and the Napoleonic troops. To slow down the advance of the Portuguese and British, the invaders even destroyed one of the pillars of the bridge.
It was with the aim of evoking the event and bringing to the memory of the population of Poiares part of the municipality’s role in resisting the French invasions that the Parish Council (JF) of Lavegadas, with the support of the Municipality of Vila Nova de Poiares and the Academia Cultural Terras de Poyares, promoted, on Sunday afternoon, the first historical recreation on the Mucela Bridge.
