O Polytechnic Institute of Coimbra is preparing a International Conference on Agriculture and Sustainability in partnership with the Legislative Assembly of the State of Amazonaswhich will take place in Manaus, in the State of Amazonas, Brazil, in 2025. The partnership agreement was signed between the two institutions on March 14th and aims to bring together several teaching and research institutions in Amazonas and contribute to the increase knowledge in this area of ​​agriculture and sustainability.

A delegation from the Polytechnic of Coimbra was in the Manaus region to sign the partnership agreement for the organization of the International Conference and to develop various institutional contacts with universities and government entities, presenting the institution and UNIgreen – The Green European University. The IPC delegation was made up of president Jorge Conde, vice-president Ana Ferreira, the director of the Institute of Applied Research (i2A) Marta Henriques and the Pro-President for International Relations, Maria João Cardoso.

For the President of the Polytechnic of Coimbra, Jorge Conde, the objective of the International Conference on Agriculture and Sustainability is to share research and innovation experiences and also learn from methods that have been implemented in Amazonas. “We also want to bring methods that we have developed in Portugal and Europe, as the Polytechnic of Coimbra is part of an alliance of eight countries through the European university UNIgreen. The objective is to take advantage of mutual knowledge to enhance the work carried out in Amazonas”.

The visit took place at the invitation of Deputy João Luiz of the Legislative Assembly of Amazonas and provided the opportunity to establish contacts and get to know several institutions linked to higher education and research in the area of ​​agriculture and sustainability: Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado do Amazonas (FAPEAM ); EMBRAPA Amazónia Oeste – Brazilian Agricultural Research Company, Secretariat of the Environment of the Government of the State of Amazonas (SEMA), University of the State of Amazona (UEA), Federal University of Amazonas (UFAM), with whom a cooperation agreement was signed; LaSalle Manaus College.

There was also the opportunity to visit some family farming farms in the interior of the Amazon forest, where the company EMBRAPA helps to promote an increase in production combined with sustainable practices. The aim was to learn about the state’s production mechanisms, through contextualization and immersion in agricultural operations, from cultivation to harvesting and processing, to understand the techniques, technologies and agricultural practices used in the region. A conversation was held with the farmers who make up the Group, to understand the challenges and opportunities faced by the agricultural sector in that region.
