Elections in Madeira should take place on May 26th

-

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa told representatives of the parties in the Autonomous Region of Madeira, who are being heard this Wednesday, that he will dissolve the region’s Legislative Assembly and schedule elections for May 26th, according to the Madeira News Diary.

According to the same newspaper, the President of the Republic is expected to sign a decree this Wednesday, after the State Council meeting, scheduled for 6 pm.

Remember, the Regional Government of Madeira has been in management since February, when Miguel Albuquerque resigned following an investigation into alleged corruption in the Autonomous Region.

Six months have already passed since the last elections in Madeira and, in accordance with the Constitution, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa therefore has the power in his hands to, if he so chooses, dissolve the Madeiran parliament and call new elections.

If there are early elections, the PSD candidate will be Miguel Albuquerque, who, after resigning, won the party’s internal elections again.
