The Union of Parishes of Vilar de Perdizes and Meixide, in Montalegre, filed a complaint with the GNR for a false letter distributed to homes calling on ex-soldiers to go to war in Ukraine, which it classified as a “bad joke”.
The president of the parish union, João da Silva Araújo, said that around 40 letters were placed in the mailboxes in the name of that municipality and falsely signed by the Portuguese Army.
“There were phone calls upon phone calls from people asking if I wrote them a letter,” he said, noting that he went to file a complaint with the Republican National Guard with a view to determining who was responsible.
The false call was left in the homes of elderly and disabled people and urges ex-soldiers to sign up as volunteers for the war in Ukraine, having planned to perform functions such as, for example, language translator.
The letter can also be read that the ex-soldiers are obliged to present themselves on Sunday, at the headquarters of that parish council in the Vila Real district, and that, in case of non-compliance, they could be penalized by paying 500 euros.
The false mobilization of the reserve corps ends with the expressions “we count on you” and “Portuguese Army”.
João da Silva Araújo classified this letter as a “joke in very bad taste”, but said that some people were worried and, therefore, asked for respect for those targeted and also for the institution União de Freguesias.
The mayor hopes that this is an isolated act, but called for reporting if other similar situations arise.
