The Carregal do Sal Cultural Center will mark the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April with some music and theater proposals, notably remembering the figure of Zeca Afonso, a historical figure in Portuguese music and associated with the Carnation Revolution.

The first show takes place at 9:30 pm on April 12th, with Diogo Martins in the “Segunda Voz” concert, which combines Zeca Afonso and classical music with the sound of the cello. An intimate solo concert that proposes “a bow” to the Portuguese singer-songwriter.

On the 13th at 4pm, the children’s theater play “Zeca Afonso, do you know who is?” takes the stage, in which the public is invited to play one of his songs, “O Homem da Gaita”, based on an illustrated book of that song and using Orff musical instruments. Participants will also transform into actors, dramatizing the illustrated story.

From the 19th until the 25th of April, the 50th anniversary of the Revolution, the company Contracanto presents the musical “Era o Dia de Cantar”, which recalls what Portugal was like before freedom. According to the synopsis, the show written by Sandra Leal and directed by António Leal tells “what a country was like before it could sing” with Zeca Afonso’s songbook as a backdrop.

In this play, actors and musicians construct a musical theater narrative that covers the days of dictatorship until freedom and, then, what was done with that freedom.

The program ends on April 28th, at 4pm, with “Aerograma Liberdade”. This children’s show uses music, illustrated images and fictional aerograms (letters sent by air mail) to tell the story of a family that also represents the history of Portugal from the 60s to April 25, 1974.
