The Portuguese Environment Agency has a 14 million euro project to replace sand on a coastal strip that includes Praia do Forte Novo, in Quarteira, whose sand disappeared after last week’s storm, the municipality said.

According to a press release from the Chamber of Loulé, in the district of Faro, the recharge of the sand is now dependent on an application for funds from the European Union and the opening of an international public tender.

“THE ARH [Administração da Região Hidrográfica] Algarve – Portuguese Environment Agency has already carried out a project to recharge the entire sandy area between the Quarteira seafront and Ancão beach, the estimated value of which is around 14 million euros”, the note reads.

The municipality adds that the project was submitted in an application for community funds under the Climate Action and Sustainability Program (PACS) and that, after approval of the application, the “opening of an international public competition to carry out the contract to replace the sand”.

Last week’s sea storm caused damage to coastal areas on the south coast of mainland Portugal, causing the sand of Praia do Forte Novo, in the parish of Quarteira, municipality of Loulé, to disappear, and also resulting in the partial destruction of the walkways and urban furniture there. .

Loulé City Council assured that it will carry out work to remove all debris and other waste accumulated there, in order to clean the entire affected area, and after replacing the sand, the municipality will “take on the rehabilitation of the walkways and adjacent equipment” .

The municipality classifies the occurrence as “regrettable” and “causing damage to the tourist image of the region”, and reaffirms the need for “the legislator to create the necessary legal conditions, through the institution of a regional fund for an immediate and simplified response to serious consequences of climate phenomena, which will increase in frequency in the future”.
