On May 14, 2014, Rúben Amorim lifted the Portuguese Cup. He was, at the time, a Benfica player and helped the Eagles beat Rio Ave 1-0; On May 26, 2024, Rúben Amorim will return to Jamor to try to win the internal trophy he needs to complete his career as a coach. After three League Cups, a championship and a Super Cup, the Portuguese Cup is the ambition. “The club really wants to and the coach also really wants to win a Portuguese Cup with Sporting”, he admitted on January 8 before the game with Tondela, the Lions’ opponent in the round of 16 of this season’s premier competition. Now, Sporting’s coach will experience it on the fourth attempt, equivalent to full seasons in Alvalade. After the ’round of 16′ in the 2020/21 season, semi-finals in 2021/22 after defeat against FC Porto, elimination in the 3rd round in 2022/23 against Varzim, the much-desired passport to the National Stadium was stamped at the time in course.

Success dominates

At 39 years old, Rúben Amorim will discuss another trophy in his career. His CV includes three League Cups, one with Sp. Braga and two with the green and white of Sporting – he lost another against FC Porto. The Super Cup also features in the coach’s history.

With the final of the Taça de Portugal assured and the leadership in the championship, with one more point than Benfica and one less game played, Rúben Amorim dreams of the double in the 2023/24 season which, given the news published recently, could be the last. The coach is highly regarded within Liverpool’s structure and his reputation could still increase in the coming months…
