A concert with the Victor Jara Brigade and a Municipal Youth Assembly are some of the Coimbra City Council’s proposals to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, in a program that will also have several moments in September.

The Brigada Victor Jara, a group that was born after the revolution in Coimbra, in 1975, will perform at Praça do Comércio on the 25th of April, in a concert that will also feature the participation of the Folkloric and Ethnographic Group of Arzila, which was born in 1974, and Colectivo Tanto-Mar, which brings together Portuguese and Brazilian musicians living in Coimbra, announced this Wednesday the City Council, in a press conference.

The concert, entitled “É Bonita a Festa”, will start at 6:30 pm and will feature a moment in which the three groups will perform together at Praça do Comércio.

On the night of April 24th to 25th, at 00:30, there will be an urban virtual poetry intervention by the artist Aglaíze Damasceno, entitled “Dentro de Ti Ó Cidade”, in Largo da Sé Velha, where “Queima do Facho” takes place every year. ” and where the house where Zeca Afonso lived is located.

In addition to the concert, there will also be a Municipal Youth Assembly in which representatives of the municipality’s secondary schools will participate, in the morning, shortly after the solemn session of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, taking place in the Noble Hall of the Coimbra City Council .

During the day on which the Carnation Revolution is celebrated, the Coimbra BD will also be inaugurated, which this year has the theme “Freedom”, and the presentation of the tourist route around Coimbra by Zeca Afonso.

The Mayor of Coimbra, José Manuel Silva, stressed that the Municipality sought to aggregate and publicize the multiple initiatives of civil society and other institutions in the city that will celebrate the 25th of April, choosing not to concentrate the Municipality’s celebrations on that day.

The committee set up by the Coimbra City Council to celebrate 50 years of the Carnation Revolution in the municipality chose to dedicate the bulk of the initiatives to September, when several artistic proposals are being considered that call for collective participation and creation.

“There will be a very symbolic moment in September, but we cannot publicize it yet. The Chamber has its heart and soul in the celebrations of the 25th of April”, he stressed, noting that the Municipality allocated around 100 thousand euros for the celebrations.

The president of the commission, the vice-rector of the University of Coimbra Delfim Leão, reaffirmed the need not to saturate the program “which was already expected to be rich” for April, noting that there will be several cultural events between the 20th and 22nd of September to mark the 25th April, in a schedule that is not yet finalized.

Delfim Leão said that there will be proposals aimed at involvement with the community, namely a documentary by Tiago Cravidão, which will give voice to people from the various parishes in the municipality about how they experienced April, in an assembly format.

Another of the proposals, entitled “What if we did everything again?”, by Madalena Vitorino, will result in a collective creation that can “take the question about April further”, he clarified.

“Music is what gives us the password and the starting point and will also be present in a final show, with a community matrix and with well-known artists who will seek to bring the entire community to the final celebration”, he highlighted.

The schedule of the various entities that celebrate the 25th of April in the municipality is being compiled by the Municipality, and is available at agenda.coimbra.pt
