In the year that marks the 100th anniversary of the death of Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva, journalist, association activist and staunch republican, the municipality of Gouveia will dedicate several initiatives to him this Thursday.
The program begins at Cemitério Velho (3 pm), with the unveiling of a tribute plaque on the grave of Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva. Next, in Largo do Castelo, is the unveiling of the plaque with his name and, from 5 pm onwards, the auditorium of the Vergílio Ferreira Municipal Library hosts an evocative session on the life and work of Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva, with the intervention of José Mota. The lecture “Past, present and future of Mutualist Associations”, by Idália Salvador Serrão, ends this evocative journey of Alfredo da Cunha Saraiva, who was the owner of the “Balões Venezianos” factory, a 20th century reference for the republican work carried out in the then village from Gouveia. He was also the one who founded, in 1896, the Associação de Socorros Mútuos dos Artistas e Operários de Gouveia and was also a partner of Pedro Botto Machado in a silk thread fabric factory.
