“[…] We would very much like to see, in particular, [as ligações de alta velocidade] Madrid-Lisbon and Porto-Vigo implemented as quickly as possible”, said Herald Ruijters, in response to Lusa, in a session in Brussels, as part of the ‘Connecting Europe Days’.

DG Move highlighted that the implementation of these connections depends on an agreement between Portugal, Spain and the respective decision-makers in matters of infrastructure, as well as the definition of priorities.

Asked about the possibility of the projects being completed by 2030, Ruijters pointed out that a “realistic” time horizon is what has been defended by the European Commission — “2030, 2040, 2050”.

Herald Ruijters also assured that the first contacts have already been made with the new Portuguese executive to find out what the priorities are in this matter.

“I’m also thinking about possible football championships in these countries in 2030 and the fact that they don’t just come from flights, but from the existence of true connectivity”, he said, adding that high speed would be “a great contribution”.

The ‘Connecting Europe Days’, which take place in the capital of Belgium until Friday, will bring together more than 3,000 participants from Member States and neighboring countries, such as Switzerland, Norway, Ukraine, Georgia, Turkey and Moldova.

At the event organized by the European Commission, together with the Belgian presidency of the Council of the European Union, ministers, politicians and representatives of financial institutions and the transport industry are expected.

On the table will be topics such as the creation of a sustainable transport and mobility network, the European Union’s ecological pact and the mobility strategy.

Throughout these four days of debate, guest speakers will also talk about the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), the impacts of climate change on infrastructure, the connectivity of the transport network with third countries and the financing of transport projects. transport infrastructures.
