Tita Maravilha was awarded the 5th edition of the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II Revelation Award, in partnership with the Ageas Portugal group. A director, performer, programmer and author thus joining the club of winners of this award, which includes Sara Barros Leitão, Mário Coelho, Cárin Geada and Pedro Azevedo, the latter distinguished in the last edition.

The multidisciplinary artist, who was born in Brazil and has lived in Portugal since 2018, defines herself as an “inventor of universes” which takes “the pains and delights of being a dissident body” into its artistic creations. Together with Cigarra, he is part of the electronic music and performance project Trypas Corassão.

In 2020, it developed Trypas Corassão: Show in Two Acts; in 2021, Tita in Wonderland It is Exercise for mediocre performers; in 2022, Exercise for a Poor Theater or letter to Grotowski It is The three sisters. The latter was the winner of the 5th edition of the Amélia Rey Colaço Scholarship. The artist also signs the Precárias Festival, which had its first edition in 2022. This year, the performance festival runs in five cities until June 8th.

At the award ceremony, which took place this Wednesday at the São Luiz Teatro Municipal, Tita Maravilha highlighted that it was a “night of celebration, but also of struggle”, in which especially celebrates “all trans, non-binary people, trans women and transvestites”. “I also celebrate and ask for respect for all the immigrants who also form the history of this country. Together we are stronger and, we will repeat in chorus, my fragility does not diminish my strength.” The performer also highlighted the importance of combating violence against dissident bodies, of fighting against the extreme right and of remembering that “the colonial wound still bleeds”not forgetting to mention that “freedom is a disputed word and fascism never again”.

O Dona Maria II is, today, more than ever, committed with this luminous idea of ​​a culture of all for all. The Revelation Prize, worth €5,000, is awarded to theater professionals who are up to 30 years old and whose artistic work has stood out in the Portuguese theater scene. The jury was made up of 15 professionals from various areas of the artistic and cultural world, including names such as Sara Barros Leitão, Cristina Carvalhal, Álvaro Correia and Mário Coelho.
