A road collision between a bus and an agricultural tractor this Wednesday morning caused a death on the EN17 near the intersection to Melo, in the municipality of Gouveia, district of Guarda, Civil Protection told the Lusa agency.
According to the Beiras and Serra da Estrela Sub-Regional Emergency and Civil Protection Command, the alert for a road collision between a heavy passenger vehicle carrying students and an agricultural tractor was received at 7:51 am.
“Initially, the victim was said to be in a serious condition, who was the driver of the tractor, but, in the meantime, he was declared dead,” said the Civil Protection source.
GNR da Guarda told Lusa that the collision between the two vehicles resulted in the death of the tractor driver, a 79-year-old man.
The 2nd commander of the Melo Volunteer Fire Department, Carlos Costa, confirmed that the victim was initially classified as seriously injured, but ended up succumbing to his injuries.
The same source said that there were no injuries reported among passengers on the bus that transported students to Gouveia.
Circulation on that section of the EN17 was restricted, but is now back to normal.
The Melo Fire Department, the GNR and the Guard’s Emergency and Resuscitation Medical Vehicle (VMER) were at the scene of the accident, with a total of six vehicles and 11 operational vehicles.
