The Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs, Verónica Macamo, considered this Thursday, in a statement to Lusa, that the 25th of April is remembered “with appreciation” in Mozambique for “creating a new era” in the independence processes.

“The Carnation Revolution of 1974 decisively changed the course of Portuguese history. It restored, on the one hand, the freedoms that the Portuguese people so longed for and, on the other, it established a democratic regime that prevails and flourishes to this day in Portugal” , explains the governor, in the statement on the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April.

The head of Mozambican diplomacy underlines that “in Mozambique, the 25th of April is remembered with appreciation for having created a new era that inaugurated the paths for negotiation, concession and recognition of the independence of the peoples of Mozambique, Angola, Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe and East Timor”.

Macamo adds that “at the time, Mozambican nationalists fighting for the liberation of Mozambique from the colonial yoke effusively welcomed the coup d’état that had overthrown a common enemy”, the “fascist dictatorship that oppressed the Portuguese people and the colonial-fascist regime that subjugated the people Mozambican”.

“Once independence was achieved in Mozambique and freedom was established in Portugal, bilateral Portuguese-Mozambican friendship and cooperation relations progressed satisfactorily and, 50 years later, reached very high levels of excellence”, recognizes Macamo.

The diplomat also states that “the full progression of the ties that unite the Mozambican and Portuguese peoples occurred in a climate of great friendship and renewed trust”, whose “source dates back to the common objectives sought half a century ago by nationalists in Mozambique and anti-fascists in Portugal”.

Macamo points out, as an example of the current level of relationship, the bilateral summits led by the heads of government of both countries, “formalized about a decade and a half ago” and which “ensure proximity and affection between the respective political leaders and guarantee the stimulation and deepening of bilateral relations”.

“This solid trajectory of friendly and cooperative relations is broad, abundant and comprehensive. Regulated by two key instruments, the Strategic Cooperation Program and the Defense Cooperation Framework Program, bilateral cooperation involves the political-diplomatic domains , economic, social and cultural”, details the minister in the same statement.

The President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, began a four-day visit to Portugal on Wednesday, on the occasion of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, at the invitation of his Portuguese counterpart, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

“Taking into account that the 25th of April has a multilateral dimension, the Freedom Day celebrations will allow President Filipe Nyusi to interact with the other leaders of the member countries of the Community of Portuguese Speaking Countries, who will flock to the Portuguese capital”, he explains Minister Macamo.

“It will, undeniably, be an occasion to remember and reflect on how decisive the national liberation struggles were in the germination of the revolt by young Portuguese soldiers, which led to the planning and execution of the coup d’état against the fascist regime of the Estado Novo”, he concluded.
