The city’s industrial and commercial growth causes traffic problems in several places

Setubalenses are asking for urgent solutions to avoid congestion, especially in areas with the most motorists.

Solutions have to be found. (DR: Américo Ribeiro Archive)

Setúbal is a city in development and could become one of the most important urban, industrial and commercial centers in the country. Despite the positive points that come from this evolution, there are also new needs in several places.

One of the situations highlighted is the level crossing in the city center, which was not a problem as it is considered today. The arteries allowed the easy flow of urban and inter-urban traffic.

However, currently, the scenario is different and the authorities are concerned with the suppression of the aforementioned level crossing, already handing over the construction of a new crossing under the railway at the Azeda site, as an element of the new direct connection of the roads of Lisbon and Alentejo, outside the city, with the most urgent work being in Setúbal, to alleviate traffic congestion.

After the project next to the Bonfim Stadium, work now continues on the square in front of the Hospital de S. Bernardo, where four busy streets flow. With the works, the visual aspect is very different from what it was.

Another area of concern is the traffic at the Avenida da Portela exits, next to the Rua da Tebaida fork, where there is no alternative but to wait in line for each driver’s turn. This is one of the places where traffic lights will be installed, which are planned for some parts of the city.
