Freedom Park. This is the name of the new Urban Park of the City of Marco de Canaveses that was inaugurated on the afternoon of this Thursday, April 25th.
The first phase of work on the new green park, which has now been inaugurated, involves an investment of 1.2 million euros, including the creation of a multifunctional leisure park measuring 14 thousand square meters. The inauguration began with a guided tour, promoted by the project’s architect, Sérgio Pinto, who spoke about the entire project, as well as the second phase.
Cristina Vieira, president of the Municipal Council of Marco de Canaveses, highlighted, at the inauguration, that the inauguration of this park is “very special and represents a commitment to the environment, sustainable development and quality of life for Marcoenses”.
The chamber sought to hold the inauguration as part of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April so that the park “carry with you the spirit of freedom and democracy. By dedicating it to this celebration, we are immortalizing the legacy and ideals of April in our toponymy. A historical connection reinforced by Salgueiro Maia square, one of the heroes of the 25th of April”.
From today onwards, Parque Liberdade is a space for “leisure and socializing” intended for families. “This place was designed to be the green lung of the city, where everyone is welcome”highlights Cristina Vieira, adding that the park will be “a reference for the variety of quality activities and infrastructure it offers and that we can all see: a huge diversity of tree and vegetation species, walking circuits, children’s equipment, playgrounds, and this large central square. In addition to all this, we will certainly boost this space with events and initiatives, as we already do with other green spaces in the municipality”.
The municipality prioritizes the municipality’s green spaces
The mayor recalled that Marco de Canaveses is “a green territory by nature”remembering the Aboboreira and Montedeiras mountains, but also the investments made by the municipal executive, namely the 300 thousand euros invested in the Municipal Garden, 150 thousand euros in the Montedeiras Park and 300 thousand euros in the Parque Multiusos Eiró, as well as the “multiple contributions” to the parks of Alpendorada, Fluvial do Tâmega and Parque de Lazer da Cidade.
The inauguration also served to present phase two of Parque Liberdade, which will be twice the size of phase one and has an estimated investment of 2.5 million euros. Cristina Vieira said that “the project will move forward this summer and the objective is for the park to be completed next year”promising “a space that will be even better and more welcoming. A second phase that will reinforce the features that the park already offers with more spaces for physical activity and a large picnic area”.
Finally, the mayor appealed for the preservation of the municipality’s green spaces. “This is our Freedom Park and I want to reiterate that we, politicians, built the basis of these works with the help of young Marcoenses and contractors, we do this work with Marcoense families in mind, but it is also important that the community takes care of this space. This is what I ask of you, for us it is important that the park is used by children, by the youngest, by all those who came here to socialize, but it is also important and I would like to end by leaving this message: help us take care of our Marco de Canaveses”.
Inside Parque Liberdade there is a square named after Salgueiro Maia, named after one of the main captains of April. The choice of name resulted from a proposal from the Association of Friends of the Municipality of Marco de Canaveses, which was approved by the city council. A plaque with the name of the square was also unveiled.
Upon completion, Parque Liberdade will occupy a total area of around 4.4 hectares of biodiversity, with spaces for events, recreation, sports and socializing.
After the presentation, there was a concert led by Orquestra do Norte, which took place in the new Parque Liberdade. In the same place, throughout the afternoon, there was children’s entertainment, with balloon modeling, face painting, balloon offerings and a treasure hunt.
