600 fruit trees planted in Braga

‘Oxigenar Braga’, an environmental awareness program developed by the Chamber and aimed at the entire population, especially children and young people, allowed the planting of more than 600 fruit trees, in the 2024 edition, which took place between the 18th and 24th of March.

In a statement, the municipality explains that the program included several activities, marking World Forest/Tree Day and World Water Day.

The Chamber distributed trees to six parish councils and unions, four associations, ten IPSS and 29 schools that signed up.

In this edition, a 500-meter section of the Barral river was adopted by EB1 de Nogueira. A EB 2,3 André Soares, EB 2, 3 Dr. Francisco Sanches and European School of Professional Education, who removed around 30 liters of cigarette butts from the streets, and consequently from the water lines. The workshops on propagating aromatic and medicinal plants and paper recycling, held at the Market, had around 70 people, including many Erasmus students.

The program featured two ‘showcookings’ at the Municipal Market, with demonstrations of simple and sustainable dishes and respective tastings, with the collaboration of AEB and Elevate. There was also training for teachers on “Algae Proteins”, which in addition to the theoretical part also included the preparation of various dishes.

Citizens were challenged to clean the Este river, with Bosch joining in with more than 50 workers and their families, cleaning the ‘Blue Elephant’ area and planting trees in the riparian gallery, in addition to 15 other volunteers who attended the INL for cleaning the Este river. In this edition there was also an activity to control invasive plants, in Picoto, with dozens of acacias, namely mimosas, being uprooted and peeled.

The “Native Trees of Portugal” exhibition was at the University of Minho during the Oxigenar Braga week, which also visited the Pedralva Educational Unit and the CACI de Gualtar, from APPACDM de Braga.

The program also included the lecture “The importance of bees and the fight against the velutina wasp” held by APICAVE and Casa do Povo de Adaúfe, Crespos, Navarra, Santa Lucrécia de Algeriz and Pousada, at the JF headquarters of Santa Lucrécia de Algeriz, which registered strong support.

For councilor Altino Bessa, mentioned in the statement, Oxigenar Braga “was once again a success, both due to the number of entities and people involved, and the variety of activities, which indicates the high value that this type of initiatives has for the county.”
