THE LOOKOUT | GEOTA has a new president who promises to reinforce environmental policy

Rogério Ivan Rodrigues was elected president of the executive committee of GEOTA – Spatial Planning and Environmental Study Group on April 20th at a general meeting held at the Centro Ecológico Educativo do Paul de Tornada, in Caldas da Rainha. Rogério Ivan Rodrigues intends to reinforce GEOTA’s role as an influencer of environmental policy through proactive intervention with other civil society organizations, academia and political decision-makers.

It is worth remembering that GEOTA received an international award for its intervention in the rehabilitation and removal of an obsolete dam on the Alviela river, in Vaqueiros, Santarém, winning a prize worth 15 thousand euros. “It was exactly one year ago that GEOTA, through the Rios Livres program, developed the rehabilitation project that included the removal of the Vaqueiros dam, which was no longer in any use and which constituted a barrier to river connectivity. Following this work, Portugal has come closer to what is already common practice in other European countries”, said Ana Catarina Miranda, coordinator of Rios Livres GEOTA.
