Miguel Castro, president of Chega-Madeira, traveled to Porto Santo, where he met with some activists and spoke to several residents of the island about the current political and social situation on the neighboring island. The head of the party’s list for the regional elections registered his regret at what he sees as “the abandonment and lack of commitment on the part of the Regional Government towards Porto Santo and the people of Porto Santo”, he said, in a note of press.

In one of his contacts with local residents, Miguel Castro was invited to visit Marina Norte, located in Porto de Abrigo do Porto Santo, where, after hearing several complaints about the degraded state of that infrastructure, he was able to personally see that “the conditions of that space they present an advanced state of degradation, which makes them a danger to users and the local population in general.”

“The abandonment of the regional government, which operates Marina Norte, is glaring and for years the promises to rehabilitate the space have not been realized. Do the rulers only remember Porto Santo when it comes to seeking votes there?”

Another place that Miguel Castro was invited to visit by the locals was the José Lino Pestana Football Stadium, supposedly home to the Portosantense team, but which does not play in Porto Santo because it does not have a field that complies with the rules of the Portuguese Federation. of football.

On site, and once again, the president of Chega-Madeira recalled that, in the seventies and eighties, Porto Santo had several football teams playing the sport on that field. Today, however, abandonment has taken over the place.

“Encouraging the practice of sport is an obligation of the regional government. Without this option, and given the isolation caused by double insularity, many young people in Porto Santo have taken less healthy paths for their personal and social development, including falling into the trap of drug addiction, which has led them to treatment or even to jail. .”

Finally, Miguel Castro, who is from Porto Santo, visited the old Junta Agrária building, an area of thousands of square meters located in Sítio da Ponta, next to the beach, which was once densely cultivated, but which, today, is “also abandoned”. There, he questioned the Regional Government about the fate of that space, namely whether there is a public project or whether it will be sold to a private individual, and, if that is the fate, what is the value.
