Although the natural balance decreased in Portugal last year, it remains in negative territory, reaching -32,596.

Portugal had a reduction in its natural balance in 2023, despite it remaining in negative territory. There were 85,699 births, 2.4% more than the previous year, and 118,295 deaths, 4.8% less. The natural balance was -32,596 compared to -40,640 last year, according to data from the National Statistics Institute (INE).

“Of the total number of live births, 59.5% were born out of wedlock, that is, they were children of parents who were not married to each other. There were 210 deaths of children under one year of age (less than in 2022), which is reflected in a decrease in the infant mortality rate, from 2.6 to 2.5 deaths per thousand live births between 2022 and 2023 ”, said INE.

INE data says that the reduction in the natural balance covered all regions of the national territory. In Greater Lisbon there was a positive natural balance of 461.

“In 2023, 36,980 weddings were celebrated in Portugal (0.1% more than in 2022). In 71.2% of cases, the couple had a common previous residence”, say data from the National Statistics Institute.
