Alex Garland’s new film brings together the best cast we could imagine and also features Wagner Moura.

Eternalized in the popular imagination as Mary Jane Watson in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, actress Kirsten Dunst began her career relatively early and, at the age of 12, shared the silver screen alongside two Hollywood legends: Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, in Interview with the Vampire.

The actress’ career only took off in the following years, managing to be alongside big names in the film industry such as Sofia Coppola, Lars Von Trier, Michel Gondry and Jeff Nichols.

In 2021, she received her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress when playing Rose Gordon, a widowed mother who becomes emotionally involved with a man whose brother makes her life impossible in Jane Campion’s film Attack of the Dogs.

Dunst did not win the Oscar, which went to Ariana DeBose. However, it was exactly after her first nomination that she only started receiving offers for “sad mother”, which was certainly a disappointment for the actress.

In a recent interview with the magazine Marie ClaireDunst shared her disappointment with the roles her agent had been presenting her with over the past few years, as if they only hired her because she was someone “they might want to be romantically involved with.”

“I haven’t worked for the last two years,” Dunst told Marie Claire. “Every role I was offered was the sad mother.” Although the actress was able to spend this time away from the cameras with her daughters, she also missed work.

Although Kirsten Dunst stated that she would return to certain jobs in her career without thinking twice to support her children and mother, a new opportunity arose with Alex Garland (Ex_Machina: Artificial Instinct) in his film Civil War.

The plot, which takes place in the not-so-distant future, when a civil war breaks out in the United States, features Wagner Moura, Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny and the actress’s longtime partner, Jesse Plemons.

In the plot, Dunst plays Ellie, a war reporter who ends up trapped in the middle of the armed conflict with a few other professional colleagues who try to record the scale and situation of the violent scenario that took to the streets in a rapid escalation. Still for the magazine, the actress shared that she had never seen a script like Garland’s, and so she was excited to finally do something new.

Civil war premieres on April 18 in theaters.
