Rivals follows Tashi (Zendaya), a controversial tennis player who becomes a coach.

Rivals (Challengers), the new feature film by director Luca Guadagnino (Call Me By Your Name), will soon hit Brazilian cinemas. And the production’s big star, Zendaya (27), plays a complex character, which could represent an important step in the actress’ career.

In Rivals, Tashi (Zendaya) is a tennis player who, when she becomes a coach, transforms her husband, the mediocre player Art (Mike Faist), into a world-famous champion. But at a tennis tournament, the couple meets Patrick (Josh O’Connor), Art’s former best friend and Tashi’s ex-boyfriend. The meeting reignites old rivalries on and off the court.

In an interview given to VMagazineat the launch of the trailer, Zendaya and her co-star Josh O’Connor declared that, in terms of character, their characters can be considered “terrible”: “We were saying the other day that our characters in this film are horrible” said Josh O’Connor ‘Connor (Via: VMagazine).

Despite having played the dark Rue in Euphoria – a role that earned her a Golden Globe and two Emmys for Best Actress in a Drama Series – Rivals may be the first major role to give Zendaya the necessary opportunity to play a character controversial and of dubious morals, all her possibilities as an actress.

Rivals opens on April 25, in theaters.
