Wish: The Power of Wishes (Disney+)
In the magical kingdom of Rosas, everyone’s dreams are guarded by the Magnificent King with the promise of one day being fulfilled. The fearless young Asha (voiced by Ariana DeBose in the original version) ends up discovering the truth behind this arrangement and, in order to face the ruler and save her community, she makes a powerful wish to a star. The film was made in celebration of Disney’s 100 years, and seeks to pay homage to the classics that marked the studio’s history. Premiere: April 3rd.
Ripley (Netflix)
New adaptation of the book The Talented Ripley, by American Patricia Highsmith, which in 1999 inspired a film with Matt Damonm, Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow. Now in a darker, serialized version, the plot stars Andrew Scott. In 1960s New York, Tom Ripley is hired to convince a rich man’s son to return home, but ends up spinning a web of lies, deception, fraud and murder. Premiere: April 4th.
Sugar (Apple TV+)
Colin Farrell plays John Sugar, a private detective hired to find the granddaughter of a famous Hollywood producer. While trying to solve the disappearance, he comes across a series of secrets belonging to the family in question and realizes that he is involved in a case of much larger dimensions. Brazilian Fernando Meirelles is one of the series’ directors. Premiere: April 5th.
The Big Interview (Netflix)
In 2019, Prince Andrew, one of Queen Elizabeth II’s heirs, gave an interview to the program Newsnight, from the BBC, in which he talked about being accused of sexual abuse and his friendship with convicted Jeffrey Epstein. The interview was a scandal for the British royal family and culminated in the prince’s isolation and removal of titles. Based on the book, the film The Big Interview dramatizes the behind-the-scenes of the program, portraying the meticulous preparation to record and air the fateful conversation. Gillian Anderson plays Emily Maitlis, the journalist who interviewed Andrew, played by Rufus Sewell in the film. Premiere: April 5th.
Parasyte: The Gray (Netflix)
Adaptation of Hitoshi Iwaaki’s successful manga, the Korean production is set in a dystopian reality in which parasites violently dominate human bodies and become powerful. Su-in (Jeon So-nee) is one of these people: she discovers that she lives with a parasite in her body and starts to fight against the invader. At the same time, the series follows the group Team Grey, whose mission is to fight the intruders. Premiere: April 5th.
Oppenheimer (Prime Video)
Winner of the Oscar for best film, it tells the story of J. Robert Oppenheimer, the American physicist who created the atomic bomb responsible for the tragedies in the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in Japan, in 1945. In addition to being a historical drama, it is also a political plot. Directed by Christopher Nolan and starring Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh and more. Premiere: April 7th (until then it was available for rent)
Fallout (Prime Video)
In a post-apocalyptic United States that has faced nuclear catastrophe, what remains of humanity lives in underground shelters – until that is no longer enough. Inspired by the video game franchise of the same name, the series features an original story that follows three different characters: a resident of one of the luxurious shelters, a young soldier who works in a paramilitary faction and a mysterious desert bounty hunter. From the same creators of Westworld. Premiere: April 11th.
Justice 2 (Globoplay)
After an eight-year hiatus, Manuela Dias’ series returns with four new intertwined stories, this time set in the Federal District. The plot will show the developments faced by the characters after seven years of incarceration. They were arrested on the same day, but they have different realities. The cast includes Juan Paiva, Murilo Benício, Belize Pombal, Nanda Costa, Leandra Leal, Paolla Oliveira and more. Premiere: April 11th.
Franklin (Apple TV+)
Michael Douglas plays Benjamin Franklin, statesman known as one of the founding fathers of the United States. The miniseries follows the years that Franklin spent in Europe on a secret diplomatic mission, forging political alliances that led to his country’s declaration of independence. The plot is based on the book A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America, by Stacy Schiff. Premiere: April 12th.
The Sympathizer (Max)
With Robert Downey Jr. in the cast, The Sympathizer follows a former French-Vietnamese communist spy (played by Hoa Xuande). Exiled to the United States after his role in the Vietnam War, he now works as a cultural consultant on a Hollywood film. Mixing espionage and satire, the series is based on the book of the same name by Viet Thanh Nguyen, which won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction, and is a creation of South Korean director Park Chan-wook. Premiere: April 14th.
The Dark Side of Children’s TV (Max)
The documentary series sheds light on the scandals that occurred between 1990 and 2010 behind the scenes at Nickelodeon, a children’s TV channel that launched famous programs, such as Drake & Josh, Zoey 101 It is Icarly. In four episodes, the series shows how Dan Schneider, the producer behind these hits, and other professionals who worked on the sets of his series were involved in cases of sexism, racism, inappropriate behavior and abuse. There is also a statement from Drake Bell, the star of Drake & Josh who recently went public alleging that she was a victim of sexual abuse while working at the station. Debut: April 16th.
Rebel Moon – Part 2: The Scar Marker (Netflix)
Second part of Zack Snyder’s film released by Netflix in December. Now threatened, the rebel warriors prepare for a bigger battle against the Mother World, led by Kora (Sofia Boutella). As they remember their pasts and their motivations to fight, new bonds and heroes are forged. Premiere: April 19th.
All of Us Unknown (Star+)
Screenwriter Adam (Andrew Scott) deals with writer’s block, isolated in the practically empty building where he lives. One day, he decides to return to his childhood home and meets his parents, who died when he was a child. Dead Detective Boys (Netflix)
Based on Neil Gaiman’s comics that share the same universe as Sandman, the series revolves around two teenage ghosts. They met in death and became great friends, creating a Dead Boys Detective Agency, in which they join forces in search of solving paranormal cases. Alongside a clairvoyant friend, they live macabre adventures that involve everything from witches to demons. Debut: April 25.
Secrets of a Scandal (Prime Video)
Competing for the Oscar for best original screenplay, Todd Haynes’ film was inspired by a case of pedophilia. The plot follows actress Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), who starts living with Gracie (Julianne Moore), a housewife who will inspire her next character, to study her. The woman has a strange relationship with her husband, Joe (Charles Melton), 23 years younger than her. Elizabeth starts to follow all of Gracie’s mannerisms, and ends up exceeding the limits of what is acceptable. Premiere: April 30th.
The Veil (Star+)
Two women engage in a dangerous game of truth and lies on a trip from Istanbul to Paris and London. One of them holds a deadly secret, and the other must decipher it to save thousands of lives. Meanwhile, intelligence agencies must work together to prevent disaster. The suspense miniseries has a script by Steven Knight, creator of Peaky Blinders, and the award-winning Elisabeth Moss in the cast. Premiere: April 30th.
