Starring Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Austin Butler and Florence Pugh, Dune: Part 2 is still available in theaters.

Based on the fantastic science fiction novel by Frank Herbert, the feature film Dune is certainly one of the biggest productions of recent years and its sequel already has one of the biggest box office sales of 2024.

One of the reasons for the success of the franchise, starring Timothée Chalamet and directed by Denis Villeneuve, lies precisely in the unique and information-rich universe created by Herbert.

In the plot, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), a brilliant and talented young man, is sent to the desert planet Arrakis, also known as Dune, to guarantee the future of his family and his people. Arrakis is also the planet of the Fremen people who, among many peculiarities, have their own language, known as Chakobsa.

Although Herbert was truly inspired by a hunter’s dialect to create the language in his book, the passages in the novel are minimal compared to Villeneuve’s adaptation. Those responsible for the dialogues created in the film were, in fact, in the hands of the linguist couple David and Jessie Peterson.

The two are among the few who make a living inventing languages for film productions. It is through the LangTime Studio channel on the YouTube platform that the couple shares their creations and curiosities about the languages they have already invented.

From Paul Atreides to Lisan al-Gaib, Dune: Part 2 gave its protagonist many names, but they all have their meaning

Among them is the language dothraki, spoken by characters from the tribe of the same name, which is led by Khal Drogo (Jason Momoa) in the first season of Game Of Thrones. Created by David, the fictional language received around 3,200 words based on languages such as Turkish, Estonian, Russian, Swahili and Inuktitut.

Jessie was one of those responsible for creating the language for the Pixar Elementos animation, where she used the sounds of explosions and noises from a match to finally form words.

Despite defining the entire craft as a game, the two carry out professional and very serious work, based on the scripts available and exclusively creating a grammar for each cinematic universe, based on the characteristics of the characters and their stories.
