Hugh Grant returns to the Bridget Jones universe in a new film with Renée Zellweger and actor from One Day.

One of the most iconic romantic comedies of the 2000s is close to returning to the screen with a new story and strong emotions – at least that’s what Hugh Grant says. More than 20 years after the release of Bridget Jones’s Diary, Renée Zellweger will return to the classic role for the fourth film in the series, which is based on the book Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, originally published in 2013.

In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Hugh Grant, who plays Daniel in the films, showed excitement for the story that will be presented in the new film. “I think the script for the fourth Bridget Jones is the best of the four. In fact, it’s one of the best scripts I’ve read in a long time (…) It’s very sad and very funny, it made me cry,” he explained.

However, for fans of the British actor who recently played an Oompa-Loompa in Wonka, the news is not so good – everything indicates that Daniel will have a very small role in the plot. “I don’t do much, I only have a few scenes. Her romantic interests [Bridget] they are younger, more interesting men,” he continued.

What is the story of Bridget Jones 4?

In the book, we see Bridget more than ten years after her union with Mark Darcy dealing with new challenges of motherhood after a major twist (which we won’t spoil!). Now, she needs to open her heart again and, with that, face new romantic and generational challenges.

There is still no confirmation about the film’s script – and its fidelity to the film’s original story –, but we already know that, in addition to Hugh Grant, the main script will also feature Emma Thompson (Nanny McPhee), Leo Woodall (One Day) and Chiwetel Ejiofor (Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness).

For now, there is no confirmed release date for the film, which should hit streaming in the United States and in cinemas in other countries in early 2025.
