The Engenheiros roadie duo who played the role of “bad cop, good cop” when dealing with fans

-

In popular expression, playing the role of “bad cop, good cop” is when one person adopts a more rigid stance and the other plays the role of “good guy” in a given situation. Normally this technique is used in interrogations when police officers want to get answers – one uses threats and the other is more friendly, to create a collaborative environment.

But what does this have to do with the Hawaii Engineers? Live at Pitadas do Sal, the band’s roadie Cássio Araújo recalled the occasion when he and his colleague Nilson needed to play these roles of “good cop and bad cop” to deal with the band’s fans.

“I just want to say something very important! Nilson and I were like the good PM and the bad PM, you know? I was the bad cop and Nilson was the good one. What happened was the following. Imagine arriving at 7am to sweat and dismantling the truck, working a lot. Then you get to the hotel and there are 50 fans in your room asking how Humberto washed his hair! Guess who put the 50 fans in there? Nilson! [risos]. It was hell, because it was a time of rest. We even went out drinking with the fans, but the room is sacred! He was a roadie’s sweetheart.”

Hawaii Engineers fans

Fans are the foundation of every band, but in the case of Engenheiros do Hawaii, they were much more than that – they became a true social phenomenon, as highlighted by former guitarist Augusto Licks.

In an interview for the same Pitadas do Sal, conducted by journalist Ariston Sal Junior, Licks reflected on the role of fans in the band’s trajectory over the years. “It’s been 30 years since I left Engenheiros do Hawaii, and there is still a curiosity and interest in the things I did back then. That impresses me. The presence of the fans in the band has always been decisive. They were our pillar. We were 90 fan clubs in Brazil and they began to communicate with each other. They are an integral part of our history; it was truly a social phenomenon.”
