“We were writing the harmonies before going to New Orleans the first year after the Hurricane Katrina disaster. When we were down there, we were talking to these people. The feeling I got was not good. I didn’t understand how we could spend 120 million dollars a year to kill people in other countries with wars and only allocate 1 million to rebuilding lives here. That really bothered me, and I felt bad, so I wrote these lyrics. Mike and I got into an argument, and he said, ‘Why Why don’t you write about Hurricane Katrina?’ So I said put it in the melody we were working on.”
