The meeting between Chuck Schuldiner, from Death, and Max Cavalera, former singer of Sepultura

-

Chuck Schuldiner was, is and will always be one of the greatest geniuses in the history of extreme music. Guitarist, vocalist, main composer and leader of the band Death, Chuck recorded albums that were fundamental to the development of Death Metal, such as “Scream Bloody Gore”, “Human” and “Symbolic”.

Chuck was one of the topics discussed during an interview given by Max Cavalera (another Metal legend) to Guitar World. Max listed the 10 guitarists who shaped his way of playing guitar and one of the musicians mentioned was the creator of Death.

“He was, without a doubt, the creator of the Death Metal sound, which is so popular today. That scene turned into a huge movement. I traded tapes with Chuck for many years. I was in Brazil, so we sent letters, t-shirts and everything for each other. I hand-printed Sepultura t-shirts for him and he wore them in photo shoots,” said Max, who recalled one of his (few) meetings with Schuldiner.

“We only met once or twice; the first time was in Florida. He showed up when we were recording the ‘Arise’ album. [disco do Sepultura lançado em 1991]. He saw the cover and said, ‘This looks like a seafood nightmare!’ because of the crabs holding the brains. This made us laugh. He said, ‘The first thing you thought of was seafood? You are crazy!'”

Finally, Max praised Chuck and imagined the musical style that the late Death leader would be playing today if he were alive.

“What an evolution in his career, from the beginning in the late 80s to his latest work in the late 90s. If he were alive today, he would be playing killer progressive metal that would be blowing all of our minds. “
