Although “Better Man” is one of the best-known songs in Pearl Jamits legendary vocalist, Eddie Vedderdid not want to release the success included in the band’s third album, Vitalogy (1994).

The revelation was made during the group’s participation in The Howard Stern Show earlier this week, in celebration of the arrival of the new album Dark Matter. When asked why Vedder didn’t want to release “Better Man,” Stern began:

The story goes that the music producer [Brendan O’Brien] told you, ‘Ed, that’s a great song. It’s going to be a hit,’ and you heard ‘hit song’ and said, ‘Fuck it, I’m not going to put it out then.’ I don’t even understand this story.

While the rest of the band laughed, Eddie made it clear that, at that moment, he was trying to escape fame, and replied:

Well, I remember that. At that point, we had stopped working with MTV… We took our spotlight a little bit away from that. We were trying to control our situation to become something we felt was sustainable. Our concern was the music, our concern was how our third, fourth album would sound.

I think we were protecting something beyond ourselves, we were trying to protect the music and our band. So moving away from those things and trying to reach that level of, I guess you would call it fame, was the only thing we were conscious of when we were working.

That’s a lot of talent to overlook, right? Check out this excerpt from the interview at the end of the article and remember this great success!
