Upon leaving this Monday’s meeting with the President of the Republic, André Ventura said that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa assured that he is not opposed to Chega being part of the Government.

Moments later, the Presidency’s office issued a brief note: “As the President of the Republic has repeatedly stated, he does not comment on statements made by political parties or newspaper reports”.

After Monday’s meeting in Belém, André Ventura said that he questioned the President of the Republic about the news published two weeks ago that Marcelo was opposed to Chega’s presence in the Executive.

“The President of the Republic completely and categorically denied that he had expressed any intention of preventing Chega from being an integral part, leader or in any other way of the Government”, Ventura told journalists.

Repeating Marcelo’s words, Ventura said that the head of state stated that “it didn’t make any sense” to put an obstacle to Chega’s entry into the Government, stressing that “it’s the people who choose”.

In statements to journalists after the hearing in Belém, Ventura stated that there is still no agreement with the Democratic Alliance “that would allow us to guarantee the stability of the Government for four years”, but assured that he will try “until the end” to reach an understanding to avoid a new political crisis.

The leader of Chega also assured that he will not be part of a Government led by the Socialist Party and said that he will not accept the nomination of Pedro Nuno Santos as Prime Minister if the PS wins the elections.

“We will not accept lightly the appointment of Pedro Nuno Santos as Prime Minister or a PS government in these conditions in which the Assembly of the Republic has a large majority for change that can be implemented”, he declared, arguing that “the majority of Parliament It’s already between Chega and PSD.”
