Dand according to data evaluating the epidemiological week between March 17th and 23rd, there were 2,856 cases of dengue without warning signs, 343 cases of the disease with warning signs and 16 serious cases.
Two deaths occurred in the metropolitan region of Panama, two in the neighboring province of Colon, located on the Caribbean coast, and the rest in the provinces of Cocle, Chiriqui and Panama Oriental.
The Ministry of Health (Minsa) recalled, in a statement, the importance of keeping homes and the work environment clean, observing mosquito nets, windows and looking under sinks, as these are places where there may be breeding grounds for the transmitting mosquito.
In 2023, 18 deaths from dengue and 16,546 cases of the disease were recorded in Panama, up from four deaths and 8,349 confirmed cases in the previous year.
In December, Minsa’s national head of epidemiology, Lourdes Moreno, stated that Panama was facing a dengue epidemic, detailing that all four existing dengue HIV positives were circulating in the country.
On March 28, PAHO warned that this is expected to be the worst dengue season in the history of the American continent, a situation that is largely due to a global increase in temperatures and extreme weather phenomena.
The health agency called on all countries to support prevention efforts and intensify the elimination of breeding sites, the main measure to prevent the spread of dengue fever, as vaccines are at a very early stage and are not yet a effective method to prevent the disease.
