Apple has six months to ensure that the iPad complies with the rules of the Digital Markets Law

The European Commission says that although this product does not meet the limits defined to be subject to the rules of the new European law, the iPad constitutes an important gateway on which many companies depend to reach their consumers.

Apple has six months to ensure that the system it uses on the iPad complies with the rules of the Digital Markets Act (DMA), which came into force at the beginning of this year. The information was communicated this Monday by the European Commission.

“Today, we include Apple’s iPad within the scope of DMA obligations. Our research has shown that despite not meeting the defined limits, the iPad constitutes an important gateway that many companies depend on to reach their consumers. The decision to today will ensure that equity and competition are preserved on this platform”, he states Margrethe Vestager, commissioner responsible for competition rules in the European Union, in the statement.

“We continue to monitor developments in the market and will not hesitate to open new investigations if other services present characteristics to be considered important gateways to other businesses”, adds Thierry Breton, European Commissioner for the Internal Market, in the same note. The European Commission’s decision obliges the North American giant to adapt its iPad system to ensure that it is in line with all obligations and prohibitions, including allowing users to download applications that are not part of the Apple Store or that can eliminate some already pre-installed.
In addition to the iPad, Apple saw other products targeted by this new law. This is the case of the iOS operating system, which is used on the iPhone, the App Store and the Safari search engine. However, the apple company has contested some of the decisions, with hearings scheduled for the end of this year.

The DMA aims to ensure that digital companies comply with the same rules, outlining clear guidelines for large platforms, in order to prevent them from imposing unfavorable conditions.
