Two paragliders, an instructor and a companion, died today following an accident during a flight in the area of Madalena do Mar, on the island of Madeira, said a source from the municipality of Ponta do Sol.

“I confirm the accident with the paraglider, an instructor and the companion, who ended up dying”, said the same source. According to the Diário de Notícias, based in Funchal, both would be Madeirans.

According to information gathered by the municipality, the two men fell “on the slope that divides the parishes of Canhas and Ponta do Sol, next to the escarpment, with indications that they fell on agricultural land”.

The same source indicated that the practice of paragliding flights is common in the southwest of the island, “especially in the summer, and it is common for many people to do this type of flights accompanied by an instructor”.

There are two launch areas, in the parishes of Canhas and Arco da Calheta, and the beach of Madalena do Mar “is identified as a landing point”.

“But, at this moment, information is still very scarce”, he pointed out.

The paraglider will have landed at 14:00 in Madalena do Mar, where the Mixed Firefighters from Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol went, the Diário de Notícias reported.
