Cape Verdean was fighting kidney cancer

Through an official statement, Boavista announced the death of its former player Nilton Fernandes: «Boavista FC deeply regrets the passing of Nilton Fernandes, a former Cape Verdean international who represented the Club at the end of the last century.»

«Nilton Fernandes, who trained as an athlete at Boavista FC, played 16 games for the main team in the 1999/2000 season, three of which were in the Champions League», added the emblem.

Last February, the Players’ Union launched a campaign to raise funds for the treatment of Nilton’s kidney cancer. The player lived in the United States and needed 20 thousand dollars.

In addition to Boavista, the Cape Verdean (international eight times) played in the Portuguese 1st division for CD Aves, Gil Vicente and Penafiel.

He also represented Esposende, FC Marco and Salgueiros in Portugal, before leaving abroad, passing through Slovenia, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Israel, where he ended his career, in the 2011/12 season.
