Forward celebrated 18 times this year and is just seven short of the best record

Truly hungry and… insatiable! Paulinho did his best again and reached 18 goals this season. Yesterday’s goal was the third he scored against Benfica – two for Sporting, one for Sp. Braga.

In fact, the striker is having his best season since being signed by Sporting from Sp. Braga, in January 2021, in exchange for 16 million euros. After having only played three celebrations in the second half of the season and scoring 14 and 15 goals, respectively, in the following two seasons, he is now chasing a record.

This best record was achieved in 2019/20, working for the Arsenalistas and with Rúben Amorim as coach. In between, there is also the 2016/17 season, in which he scored 20 goals for Gil Vicente, which earned him transfers to Braga the following summer.

Taking an x-ray of this season’s goals, the number 20 scored 12 goals in the championship, four in the Portuguese Cup, one in the Allianz Cup and another in the Europa League. At this moment, he is in the third consecutive game to score – Boavista, E. Amadora and Benfica –, equaling his best run of the season, achieved in the first three rounds of the 1st League, against Vizela, Casa Pia and Famalicão.

Sniper Hjulmand in action

He didn’t arrive at Alvalade with a goalscoring label, but he’s showing that every now and then he likes to dip his spoon in the soup. Hjulmand scored for the fourth time wearing a Sporting shirt and, interestingly, the goal scored against Benfica was the third scored from outside the area. Even more curious is the fact that until he headed to the Lions, the Dane had only scored one goal, playing for Admira Wacker, in 2019/20.

Truly hungry and… insatiable! Paulinho did his best again and reached 18 goals this season. Yesterday’s goal was the third he scored against Benfica – two for Sporting, one for Sp. Braga.
