O April 1st is generally a bad time to launch a new product. Being April Fools’ Day, there is a risk that most people will not believe that the product is real and consider the whole situation a joke.

Google is well known for participating in the typical April 1st joke, but in 2004, the technology giant decided to use the theme to its advantage and launch what would be one of its main products: Gmail.

Yes, Gmail was launched 20 years ago and, as the Associated Press recalls, Google’s goal at the time was to launch a product so good that people wouldn’t believe it was real. It is worth remembering that, when it was launched, Gmail offered 1GB of free storage per account.

“That was part of the charm, launching a product that people wouldn’t believe was real. It changed the way people understood the types of applications that were possible within a web browser.”noted a former Google engineer, Paul Buchheit.

Precisely 20 years later, Gmail is undoubtedly one of the most used email services in the world and has around 1.8 billion active accounts and currently offers 15GB of free storage for all accounts.
