Adobe announced, on Tuesday (23), the launch of new generative artificial intelligence tools for Photoshop. The new features, still in beta, enhance the capabilities of image editing software thanks to the integration of Firefly Image 3, the new generation of the foundational model capable of generating images from text.

One of the highlights is “Generate Background” which, as its name suggests, allows you to create a background for an image considering the lighting, shadows, reflections and perspective of the object. This tool can be ideal for graphic artists who are creating projects for a product advertisement. See the example:

Photoshop will also receive a tool called “Enhance Details”, which improves the sharpness of variations generated through generative filling. This means variations can blend into the existing image more naturally.

“Generate Similar” is also coming. It is a tool that uses one of three images generated by artificial intelligence as a reference to produce another image with a similar appearance. “Generate Image”, in turn, allows you to create an entire image from a text description on a blank page.

Another interesting feature coming to Photoshop is the Reference Image, which allows you to load an image saved on your computer to “inspire” artificial intelligence by generating another image with a similar style.

Faced with concerns about image copyright, Ely Greenfield, director of technology for digital media at Adobe, tells The Verge that Photoshop will display a message when the tool is used for the first time, informing that the user must have the rights to the image to be used as a reference.

The company is also working on a marker called “Don’t Train” for the Content Authenticity Initiative. Therefore, images that have this tag cannot be used using images as references. Additionally, images uploaded as references will not be used to train Firefly.

In addition to the new generative AI features, Adobe Photoshop is also receiving, in its beta version, simpler features that can help when editing photographs. The Adjustment Brush, for example, allows you to make non-destructive changes — such as color adjustments to objects — more quickly in specific areas of the image.

The new tools are now available in the beta version of Adobe Photoshop for PC, and will be made available to all users of the application soon. Firefly Image 3 is now available for public testing in its web version.
