The Portuguese-Serbian writer Dejan Tiago-Stankovic, 57 years old, winner of the Debut Crown/2018 award, was found dead today at his residence in Lisbon, advanced a diplomatic source to the Lusa agency.
The writer “died Tuesday night at his home in Lisbon, and his body was found this Wednesday, as we were informed”, explained the Serbian ambassador to Portugal, Ana Ilic.
The book “Estoril – A war novel”, by Tiago-Stankovic, won, in 2018, the Debut Crown prize, awarded annually by the United Kingdom’s Historical Writers Association, to the best historical novel published in English by a first-time author in the genre.
The Serbian writer naturalized Portuguese had already won, in 2015, the award of the Serbian Academy of Letters and Sciences, and, in 2017, he was a finalist for the Fernando Namora Prize, with this novel based on real events and set in Portugal.
“Estoril – A War Romance” tells a story of spies and ‘glamour’ in Estoril in the 1940s, when Portugal was the meeting and escape point for an entire Europe during the upheavals of World War II (1939-1945).
The book was published in Portugal in 2016, by E-primatur, through the seal BookBuilders.
Dejan Tiago-Stankovic published this novel in Serbia, in 2015, having achieved immediate success, which made it a top seller.
The work is the result of more than a year of research in newspapers, diaries and secret documents, some of which are almost first-hand, says Bookbuilders.
Born in 1965, in Belgrade, in the former Yugoslavia, where he studied architecture, Dejan Tiago-Stankovic lived in London, where he met his ex-wife, a Portuguese woman, with whom he moved to Portugal in 1996.
He translated books by José Saramago, José Cardoso Pires and Fernando Pessoa, into Serbo-Croatian, and by Ivo Andric, into Portuguese, and wrote articles for the press in Serbia, Croatia, Brazil and Portugal, among other countries.
In 2017, Dejan Tiago-Stankovic wrote “Contos de Lisboa”, also translated into English.
