The Factory Price Station, a project by startup Green Mining with support from Grupo Boticário opens its new unit in Juiz de Fora, Minas Gerais, on the premises of the Indorama Ventures Soluções Sustentáveis recycling factory. The space will receive recyclable materials from anyone who wants to correctly dispose of their waste and, in return, makes payments through PIX according to the weight of material delivered.
“The amounts we pay for waste are compatible with those paid by recycling plants. By eliminating intermediation, we believe that we will be able to divert glass and other materials from landfills more and more to truly improve the country’s recycling numbers. What was waste has become the main source of income for many people”, says Rodrigo Oliveira, president of Green Mining and vice-president of the Brazilian Association of Reverse Logistics (Abelore).
Since the Factory Price Station project was launched in November 2021, more than 2,300 tons of waste have been collected and sent for recycling.
The objective is to generate benefits for the environment and for the people who take their recyclables to the station, who can increase their income with what was often simply thrown away. The focus is waste pickers, but the initiative is open to everyone who wants to correctly dispose of their waste and receives money for doing so.
“What we are doing goes beyond applying the concept of reverse logistics. We are recognizing the environmental service of collectors for the quality of life in cities and lower carbon emissions. We want to encourage the conscious disposal of packaging and pay the value these materials are worth”, adds Rodrigo.
How it works?
To receive payment for the waste collected, it is necessary to download the free Green Mining app, available on the App Store and Google Play platforms, fill out a brief registration form and indicate the material being delivered, which will be weighed and classified.
From there, a receipt is generated and, when it reaches R＄10, the amount will be deposited weekly, on Fridays, into the person’s account through PIX. To participate in the project, you must have a CPF and be over 18 years old.
Expansion to Minas Gerais
With units in São Paulo and Bahia, the Factory Price Station arrives in Minas Gerais to encourage the recycling chain in Brazil. With the partnership of Indorama Ventures, which recycles PET plastic packaging on site, the company Ibema, responsible for recycling cardboard, paperboard and white paper, and Massfix, which carries out the glass recycling process, it is possible to guarantee a efficient waste management, reducing demand for new resources and generating income for collectors, carters and other people who want to earn extra income from recyclables.
For Grupo Boticário, which already has a long-standing relationship with Minas Gerais, the expansion of the project is another possibility to continue positively impacting people’s lives and address its commitment to waste management. “The Factory Price Station is one of the initiatives developed to contribute to the environmentally correct destination of collected materials and increase people’s income. Opening a unit in Juiz de Fora makes it possible to further strengthen the relationship we have with Minas, where one of our distribution centers is also located”, says Mariana Cavanha, Sustainability manager at Grupo Boticário.
According to Renata May, Commercial Manager at Indorama Ventures, the project meets the challenge of increasing PET recycling rates in Brazil. “By providing fair compensation and encouraging increased consumer adoption of PET recycling, we also contribute to reducing the disposal of materials that can be recycled in landfills, dumps and other inappropriate places,” she states.
