Autumn begins today, March 20th in Brazil. The season starts at 0:06 am and ends on June 21st, at 5:51 pm.

Autumn occurs after summer and precedes winter. The autumn season marks the transition between the hot, humid summer and the cold, dry winter, mainly in Central Brazil.

It is important to remember that today only autumn begins in the Southern Hemisphere. The Northern Hemisphere is, from today onwards, in the Spring season.

Features of the autumn season

Autumn, also known as fruit season, is considered a transition season as it begins with warmer temperatures and ends with the onset of cold weather.

Another characteristic of autumn is that, initially, days and nights have the same length, that is, 12 hours. As autumn progresses and we approach winter, the days become shorter and the nights longer.

See below the main characteristics of autumn according to this article:

  • It has lower temperatures, going from high to milder;

  • It has a greater incidence of winds and a decrease in air humidity

  • There may be fog in the morning, in addition to the occurrence of frost and, in some cases, even precipitation in the form of snow.

According to the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet), linked to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, in the autumn season the first occurrences of phenomena such as fog, frost, snow and cold appear.

Autumn, fruit season

Autumn is remembered as fruit season as it marks the beginning of the harvest period. Due to the wide variety of fruits that are in the final phase of their production cycle, autumn is known as fruit season.

Among the best-known fruits of autumn, the following stand out: apple; papaya; orange; pear and grape.

What will fall 2024 be like?

Inmet released the main forecasts for autumn 2024 for the five regions of Brazil. Check out:

Autumn 2024 in the North region

Some areas in the North region, such as the north of Roraima, the northwest and southwest of Amazonas and the west of Acre, are expected to have above-average rainfall. But, in general, the North region will have less rain due to the impacts of the El Niño phenomenon.

Autumn 2024 in the Northeast region

According to Inmet, the Northeast region during autumn 2024 will have air temperatures above the historical average in much of the region in the coming months. However, temperatures may be milder on the coast compared to the interior, due to a few consecutive days with rain.

Fall 2024 in the Midwest Region

Much of the Midwest region in autumn 2024 will have higher temperatures and less rainfall. The exception is the state of Mato Grosso do Sul where higher rainfall is expected.

Autumn 2024 in the Southeast Region

Inmet predicts that, in the Southeast region of Brazil, temperatures and rain may be more intense, especially in areas of São Paulo and southern Minas Gerais.

Autumn 2024 in the South Region

The South region in autumn 2024 should also have above-average rainfall and temperatures. But, according to Inmet, the first incursions of cold air masses may enter in the coming months, which could cause a decline in temperatures, especially in higher altitude regions.
