The daughter of former PM Ronnie Lessa, Mohana Lessa, stated that the death of councilor Marielle Franco (Psol) was “brutality” and that she “gave up her own life to try to prove the innocence of someone who was not innocent”.

The letter was prepared after confirmation that Lessa reached a plea bargain agreement with the Federal Police and this was approved by the Federal Supreme Court (STF).

“Such brutality is unacceptable. It is completely against what we think, believe and defend.”

Below is the full letter. Open letter to the press

“As I said a few weeks ago, I just wanted everything to be a nightmare of the worst kind and I could wake up and go on with my life.

Without much delay, after confirming the approval of a statement made by Lessa (or Ronnie, as I knew), we, as a “family”, maintain our initial position. Such brutality committed is unacceptable. It is completely against what we think, believe and defend.

For 5 years I unfolded myself into a thousand and gave up my life to try to prove the innocence of those who were not innocent. I trusted faithfully, until the last second. I don’t know if it was my reason speaking, or my heart. My mother was arrested, my uncle was arrested, friends were arrested, I myself was prosecuted, and all that, for what?

I have always called for justice, whatever it may be. And that will never change. In any case, we, as a family, do not and will not accept any protection from this agreement. We believe that we have absolutely NOTHING to do with this story, and we just want distance and peace from it all. The choice of this crime was not ours, therefore the consequences will not be ours either. May God, with all his mercy, forgive those responsible for all this one day.

The choice made by the participants in this, whoever they were, ended not only the lives of councilor Marielle and her driver Anderson, but also those of their respective families, and ours. Nothing will ever be the same again.

I have a bad habit of apologizing for mistakes I didn’t make. Therefore, forgive me, from the bottom of my heart, for everything I didn’t do. I’m really sorry; for you, and for us. I sincerely hope that God can comfort us in some way after this is all over (if possible). And may it all end soon.

Signed: Mohana (on behalf of myself and my entire family, who share the same feeling of disappointment and sadness).”
