The Catholic Church of Fernando de Noronha released, this Friday (22), the religious program for Holy Week. The celebrations will be held at Matriz Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. On Sunday (24), the Ramos Mass will be held at 8 am and 8 pm.
The island’s priest, Weslley Souza, spoke about the symbolism of this celebration. “The Palm Mass is a reminder of the entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem, where he was acclaimed, and days later he was crucified by these same people. It symbolizes our love for God, but it is often a fragile love”, said the parish priest.
Fernando de Noronha will have the Pascal Triduum on Thursday (28), Friday (29) and Saturday (30). “On Thursday there is the Washing of the Feet Mass and the Lord’s Supper, at 8pm. On Friday, the Passion Celebration will take place at 3pm; and, shortly after, the procession of Senhor Morto, in Vila dos Remédios. On Saturday, there is the Easter Vigil, at 8pm, with the blessing of the fire and the Pascal Candle, which symbolize the light of Christ himself”, explained the priest.
The program ends on Sunday (31), with the two Easter Mass celebrations, at 8 am and 8 pm. Holy Week is the most important period for Catholics.
“It’s the biggest Catholic festival. Easter is the closure of the entire mystery of humanity’s salvation, it represents when Jesus died, rose again and fulfilled his father’s plan for him and returns to his father”, said Father Weslley Santos.
Religious acts are open to residents and tourists, at the headquarters located in Vila dos Remédios.
