Understand the story of the mysterious patient Clarinha, who was in a coma for 24 years

Ten days after the death of Clarinha, an unidentified patient who spent almost 24 years in a coma in a hospital in Vitória, the police continue to carry out fingerprint comparison tests against documents, located based on information passed on by families looking for a possible compatibility. According to the Civil Police of Espírito Santo, officially, nine families searched for and sent information about missing people in recent days.

So far, all families have had their demands met. Four have already received negative reports, others are awaiting expert opinion. While the tests are being carried out, the expectation is that Clarinha’s body will remain in the Vitória Legal Medical Department for at least 40 days, until she is released for burial.

In this report you will see:

Until this Friday (22), no case presented by the families required the appointment of a DNA test, because all the missing women identified by the families had a General Registry (RG), that is, they were capable of comparison using fingerprints. If necessary, genetic tests (DNA) will be scheduled for next week.

The Civil Police reported that they are receiving demands via the WhatsApp number (27) 3225 8260.

  • Three cases from São Paulo – one of which is a negative report and the other is awaiting the sending of the medical records by the São Paulo Civil Police. The third case, initially, was from Minas Gerais, and the family said that Clarinha would not have had her ID card while she was alive, so she would be sent straight for DNA. But, later, it was reported that her mother could have obtained an ID in the state of São Paulo. Now, the Espírito Santo police are also waiting for the records to be sent by the São Paulo PC.
  • A case in which the Espírito Santo police are waiting for the family to provide registration information about the missing person.

How Clarinha ended up in a coma

Undocumented hospitalization and coma

The woman was rescued by an ambulance from the Emergency Medical Care Service (Samu) and taken to São Lucas State Hospital, also in Vitória. She arrived already in a coma, due to the trauma, and without documents. A year later, she was transferred to the Military Police Hospital (HPM), where she remained for almost 24 years.

How did the name Clarinha come about?

Clarinha was transferred to HPM on June 27, 2001, with a referral from the first hospital, which only described the patient’s sequelae without identification. On the very first day, got the nickname of the new medical teamwho understood that it would be necessary to humanize the way victims were treated.

Clarinha had at least one child before the accident

From the first moment, the medical team hoped to find a relative or even a child of Clarinha, as she had a cesarean scar, but that didn’t happen. The scar indicated that she had at least one child before the accident.

More than 100 families tried to prove kinship

A curious fact is that some of these families that sought information from Clarinha ended up finding the real relatives they were looking for thanks to DNA tests that were found in the National Genetic Profiles Bank.

Missing child in Guarapari was the case with the greatest chance of identification

In 2021, an expert from the National Security Force, who at the time worked in Cariacica, in Greater Vitória, carried out an assessment looking for similarities and possibilities of identification. He reached an 80% possibility of compatibility, but the relationship was ruled out by the DNA test. To this day, this family has not found the child either.

Clarinha died on Thursday night (14). She felt sick, had a bronchoaspiration and couldn’t resist. The patient was healthy and had no illness during all these years of hospitalization. This was her first incident and it led to her sudden death.

Who took care of Clarinha during these years

Clarinha depended entirely on the team’s observation. O Colonel Jorge Potratz led the care throughout all the years of hospitalization at HPM, together with the medical team. Potratz paid for the patient’s needs for years, purchasing personal hygiene products such as soaps, creams and diapers.

Now, Clarinhas’ fingerprints are being compared with General Registry (RG) documents from family members who contacted the police due to an alleged relationship.

The Espírito Santo Civil Police expects to carry out DNA tests next week, if any case arises in which fingerprint comparison is not possible. For now, there is no scheduling made by the Civil Police.

The decision was taken by the Civil Police due to the emergence of new possible family members after the patient died. The idea is that, with this longer period, there is a chance that the woman will be buried with her real identification.

Clarinha gets the right to registration

One day before Clarinha’s death, the Espírito Santo Court authorized the woman’s civil registration. For experts, the authorization excludes the possibility of her being buried as a pauper. This means that, if the patient is not identified in the next few days, a birth and death record will be made with the name “Clarinha”, and she will be released so that the burial can be carried out, probably by the medical team that is responsible for the patient care while hospitalized.
