The occurrence of strong storms in the southeast region of Brazil, especially in the state of Rio de Janeiro, caused, by the end of this Saturday morning, seven officially confirmed deaths. Tracking dogs are being used to search for buried people.
The city of Petrópolis was one of the most affected, with landslides and at least four deaths reported. According to the website “UOL”, a child was removed alive from the wreckage of a construction site and the father’s body was also found, but the man was declared dead at the scene.
There was yet another death in the mountainous region, in the city of Teresópolis. A truck driver died on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro, when the vehicle he was driving fell into a river, and in Arraial do Cabo, on the coast of the state, a man was the victim of lightning.
The governor of the state of Rio de Janeiro lamented the lives lost. “With deep regret, I express my solidarity with the families and friends of the citizens who lost their lives,” said Cláudio Castro, in posts on social media this Saturday.
Meteorologists explain that the large volumes of rain are due to the excessive heat seen in the last week in that region.
In 2022the city of Petrópolis was the scene of the biggest climate tragedy, which left around four thousand people homeless and 235 fatalities.
