Father killed in collapse used his body as a shield to save daughter, buried for 3 hours – Campos 24 Horas

Updated at 2:59 pm – The grandfather of the girl rescued after spending 15 hours buried in Petrópolis, in the Serrana region of Rio, said that his son used his body as a shield to protect his daughter, Ayla, just four years old. (Read more below)

The girl was rescued by the Fire Department on Saturday morning (23). Even with the intense rain, at 11pm on Friday (22), the teams did not interrupt the search. (Read more below)

“My son was a warrior. He stayed all this time and saved his little daughter. Imagine the pain it is for a person to lose their child, it hurts a lot”, says Roberto, who spent the whole night following the search. (Read more below)

The four dead in the collapse of the building where the family lived, in the Independência neighborhood, are the girl’s father, Douglas José de Souza, aged 24; Ayla’s mother, 8-year-old brother and maternal grandmother. (Read more below)

The girl is doing well, is talking and in good health, as shown in a video taken at the hospital by the girl’s relatives. (Read more below)

The child was the fifth person rescued alive in the collapse of the three-story building, which occurred in the dependency neighborhood. Still on Friday, the first three deaths were confirmed. (Read more below)

City Hall declared a state of emergency at 10:45 pm this Friday (22). (Read more below)

On social media, Mayor Rubens Bomtempo commented that Petrópolis has already suffered a lot from the rain during the day. (Read more below)

“Our city is in a crisis stage. We also announced an emergency decree, due to the possibility of high rainfall recorded, with consequences in several areas, and the possibility of this scenario continuing in the coming days”, said Bomtempo. (Read more below)

According to Civil Defense, the Independência neighborhood was the most affected area. Across the city, there was more than 270mm of rain in 24 hours, more than expected for the entire month, and more than 190 occurrences were recorded.(Read more below)

The decree was a recommendation from the Integrated Command and Control Center – a group that brings together institutions and bodies involved in preparing for and responding to the rains in Petrópolis (agencies from the City Hall, Fire Department, Army, Military Police and Enel and Águas do Imperador concessionaires) .(Read more below)

Installed by Mayor Rubens Bomtempo on Wednesday (20), the Integrated Command and Control Center is operating in the main building of City Hall (on Avenida Koeler), with representatives from participating institutions and bodies.
