This Sunday, a significant operation conducted by the Federal Police and the Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime (Gaeco) resulted in the arrest of Domingos Brazão, member of the State Court of Auditors (TCE), his brother Chiquinho Brazão, federal deputy, and Rivaldo Barbosa, delegate of the Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro.

They are accused of being the masterminds behind the murder of councilor Marielle Franco and driver Anderson Gomes in March 2018.

Rivaldo Barbosa, who took office just one day before the crime, would have ensured impunity in collaboration with Domingos Brazão, according to information from the G1.

The operation also included searches at the headquarters of the TCE and the RJ Civil Police Headquarters, in addition to the residence of police chief Giniton Lages, who led the RJ Homicide Police Station at the time of the murders.

The arrests and searches were approved by the Attorney General’s Office (PGR), marking progress in the investigations into the case, which still seeks to define the complete motivation behind the crime.

According to information obtained, the reason would be related to the territorial expansion of the militia in Rio de Janeiro.

Ronnie Lessa, a former military police officer arrested since 2019 and accused of carrying out the crime, contributed to the investigations by accepting a collaboration agreement with the PF, pointing out the principals and clarifying possible motivations linked to an influential political group in Rio with interests in several sectors.

Marinete da Silva, Marielle Franco’s mother, expressed her pain and hope for justice during an interview with GloboNews, reflecting the feelings of many who follow the case.
