After six years of investigations, the Federal Police arrested the three men identified as those responsible for the murders of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes. Among those detained are Domingos Brazão, counselor at the RJ Court of Auditors; Chiquinho Brazão, federal deputy for RJ; and Rivaldo Barbosa, former head of the Civil Police.
The case’s conclusion is significant because of the questions asked by the left over the years and the political accusations that have emerged on all sides. The outcome highlights the possible connection between the police and politics in the murder of Marielle, who was fighting against the expansion of the militia in RJ.
Surprisingly, the delegate in charge of the case himself was involved in planning the crime, providing guidance to the killers and obstructing the investigations.
Previously, two former military police officers had already been arrested for committing the murders. The denunciation of one of them was crucial in reaching the alleged masterminds.
To date, no person has been convicted in the case, and all arrests have been preventive. While government politicians celebrated the development as a “historic day”, Marielle’s family expressed their relief. On the other hand, right-wing politicians criticized the left for their accusations against Bolsonaro.
