“We cannot grow and develop the country if we continue to have these levels of violence particularly against women, girls and children” why “it is a stain that tarnishes the image of Cape Verde”said in statements to the press José Maria Neves for whom it is necessary “to have a society with more peace and more friendship”.

These statements come following the death yesterday morning at the Agostinho Neto University Hospital, in the city of Praia, of a young 22-year-old woman after allegedly being attacked by her partner who is currently being sought. The victim, a resident of Gil Bispo, in the municipality of Santa Catarina, on the island of Santiago, left behind a minor son, authorities said.

Also reacting to this occurrence, the Cape Verdean Institute for Gender Equality and Equity (ICIEG) also drew attention to this case. “The symbolic women’s month has not yet ended and Cape Verdean society is faced with the second case of homicide based on gender-based violence in 2024, a young woman from Santa Catarina de Santiago, attacked by her partner”said this institution in a statement.

In the same sense, the municipality of Santa Catarina has scheduled a march to end violence against women, tomorrow, on the day that marks Cape Verdean Women’s Day.

It should be noted that after noting a decrease in gender-based violence crimes in 2019, Cape Verdean authorities reported last year an increase in these cases of around 16% during 2022.
