Bomb! PF confirms that RJ Civil Police sabotaged investigation into Marielle’s murder

The final report of the Federal police about the murder of Marielle Franco and Anderson Gomes, which occurred six years ago, highlights a series of flaws in the investigation conducted by the Rio de Janeiro Civil Police. These deficiencies are considered responsible for the failure to identify those who ordered the crime.

According to the PF, the actions of the Civil Police, under the leadership of then chief Rivaldo Barbosa, are criticized for allegedly facilitating the obstruction of the investigation so that the true masterminds are not reached.

The PF alleges that the team assigned to the case, led by delegate Giniton Lages, did not carry out effective investigations and contributed to the sabotage of the investigation. Both Barbosa and Lages deny involvement in the case and face legal action arising from the allegations.

Former military police officer Ronnie Lessa, who confessed to the crime, identified Domingos and Chiquinho Brazão as the masterminds in a plea bargain recently approved by the STF.

The Federal Police also mentions a series of procedural errors and omissions on the part of the Civil Police, including the failure to capture and adequately analyze security images, the reliance on dubious anonymous reports, and the loss of key evidentiary material, such as Eduardo’s cell phone. Siqueira, involved in cloning the license plate of the vehicle used in the crime.

The report suggests that the combination of these failures contributed to the ineffective conduct of the investigation, distancing it from the true principals and transforming the Marielle case into a “cold case”, a term used when a case is close to becoming insoluble due to the difficulty of produce substantial new evidence.

The State Secretariat of Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro stated that it is conducting an internal investigation to investigate the conduct of Rivaldo Barbosa and Giniton Lages, while Barbosa’s defense reiterates his innocence. Lages, in turn, defends his independence and autonomy during the investigation.
