A former Yoozoo Games executive was sentenced to death for the murder of a producer of the Netflix series The 3-Body Problem.
According to The New York Times, Shanghai’s First Intermediate People’s Court found Xu Yao guilty of the fatal poisoning of Lin Qi, who was dubbed “China’s billionaire millennial.”
Yoozoo Games, founded by Lin in 2009, holds the rights to all adaptations of the sci-fi best-seller, including a theatrical adaptation, an animated series and the Chinese series of The 3-Body Problem, which debuted last year.
Xu’s capital sentence was handed down on March 22, one day after the Netflix debut of the series created by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss, along with Alexander Woo.
Lin – who was posthumously credited as an executive producer of the series – died on Christmas Day 2020, at the age of 39, 10 days after drinking a drink that Xu had laced with poison, the court was told, as reported by CBS.
According to court documents cited by the Associated Press, four other people also fell ill as a result of drinks poisoned by Xu at Yoozoo offices between September and December 2020, but did not die.

The drama series is an adaptation of Chinese author Liu Cixin’s trilogy of science fiction books The Three-Body Problem, the story of humanity’s first contact with an alien civilization.

Benioff and Weiss serve as showrunners and executive producers. Woo co-created the series with Benioff and Weiss and is an executive producer and writer.
Bernadette Caulfield (Game of Thrones, The X-Files) is executive producer. Rian Johnson (Knives Out, Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi), Ram Bergman and Nena Rodrigue are executive producers.
Oscar-nominated director Derek Tsang (Better Days) is among the series’ directors.
