Renault Kardian vs Chevrolet Tracker: French is cheaper and better equipped

The new Kardian continues to face several rivals in our comparisons, and today it’s time to see who is better in a dispute against the Tracker.

Does the newcomer have what he needs to face the 2023 runner-up?

Cheap Kardian until when?

With a more aggressive proposal on the market, the prices of the new Kardian 2024 are a highlight, but of course this also happened with the Tracker and other SUVs when they were launched.

Subsequently, it is very likely that the brand will announce increases for its new product.

For now, the Renault model starts at R$112,800 in the entry-level Evolution version. Like the rest of the range, it is equipped with the new 125 hp 1.0 turbo engine and six-speed automatic transmission.

The two versions above this initial configuration require a jump of approximately R$10,000, with the intermediate Techno costing R$122,900 and the top-of-the-line Première Edition costing almost R$132,800.

Chevrolet has once again sold the entry-level version of the Tracker, which does not have a specific nomenclature and starts at almost R$120,000.

In other words, this SUV is a step above when it comes to the price list.

With the same 116 hp 1.0 turbo engine and six-speed automatic transmission, the line also features the LT, Midnight and LTZ versions. They cost between R$138,000 and R$150,800, remembering that the Midnight has a darkened look.

Finally, the Tracker still offers the 133 hp 1.2 turbo engine in the RS versions, another one that has an exclusive look, and Premier.

They cost R$167,100 and R$170,100, proving that Chevrolet’s price list is much saltier than its rival in this comparison.

The French are more equipped

With higher prices, the Tracker only has two versions that can be compared with the Kardian to find out which one is better equipped.

The first confrontation is between the Kardian Techno (R$ 122,990) and the Tracker 1.0 Turbo AT (R$ 119,900).

More expensive, the Renault offers 17-inch wheels, height-adjustable LED headlights, tire pressure alert, parking sensor, forward collision alert with automatic braking, automatic A/C, gear changes on the steering wheel, leather seats , start/stop and electric parking brake.

The only advantage of the Tracker is the automatic switching on of the headlights, and both have six airbags, a reversing camera, ramp assistant, daytime running lights, cruise control, face-to-face key and eight-inch multimedia with wireless mirroring.

When comparing the Kardian Première Edition (R$ 132,790) with the Tracker LT (R$ 138,040), the Chevrolet model only has Wi-Fi as a differentiator, once again losing to its rival.

The Renault has a 360º camera, fog lights, front sensors, blind spot warning, adaptive speed control and induction charger, in addition to continuing to be the only one with several of the items mentioned in the comparison above.

In short, the Tracker is far from being a naked SUV, but you need to go a little higher in its range (and pay a lot more) to have the same level of items offered in the Kardian. Therefore, the newcomer has the best advantage in this regard.

Kardian is not that economical

Keeping an eye on market trends, the Kardian has already arrived with a great new feature under the hood: the new 1.0 TCe engine, which has 3 cylinders and a turbocharger.

It delivers 125 hp and 22.4 kgfm, always connected to the 6-speed automatic transmission, which is also new in our market.

With this package, any version of the Renault can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 10 seconds, with a top speed of 185 km/h. But is this enough to face Tracker?

On the Chevrolet side, we have the well-known 1.0 turbo with 116 hp and 16.8 kgfm, also with a 6-speed automatic transmission. It reaches 100 km/h in 10.9 seconds, reaching a top speed of 177 km/h.

Even losing this engine, the Tracker still has the 1.2 turbo with 133 hp and 21.4 kgfm in the more expensive versions. With the same gearbox, it takes 9.4 seconds to reach 100 km/h and tops out at 185 km/h.

In addition to better performance, Chevrolet also wins the competition in terms of consumption.

Its 1.0 turbo version is the best in all measurements, but it is interesting to note that the Kardian also lags behind the Tracker 1.2 turbo on the road.

The advantage of a larger trunk

The Kardian’s competition will not be against all compact SUVs, but its internal space is not bad and this launch has some good surprises in store for its passengers.

And look, it is smaller than the Tracker in almost all measurements.

The Chevrolet model wins in length (4.27 x 4.12), in width (1.79 x 1.77) and in height (1.62 x 1.54), but it is curious to see that the Kardian has 2 .60 m wheelbase, compared to 2.57 m for the Tracker.

As we have already mentioned in other comparisons, this is good news for those who sit in the second row of the Renault, as it manages to offer reasonable space for the legs. In addition, it also has two USB ports and a storage compartment.

In the Tracker, the space ends up being very similar, but there is no storage compartment. With the exception of this small difference, it can be said that both offer similar comfort for rear occupants.

In the trunk, however, the Chevrolet model has the advantage with its 393 liters, compared to the Renault’s 358 liters.

And that was enough to secure another victory for Tracker.

Maintenance and sales

Renault has not yet released the price list for the Kardian revisions, and obviously we do not have sales information for the car, which has not yet reached the brand’s stores.

But the automaker’s expectations are high, expecting a substantial volume of units sold each month.

In the case of the Tracker, revisions are carried out every 10,000 km and do not change the value between its two engines, varying between R$456 and R$1,052. Up to 60,000 km, owners will spend almost R$4,800, which is within the market average.

In sales, the Chevrolet model impressed in 2023 and was the runner-up in the competitive SUV segment after totaling almost 66,700 units.

In 2024, counting the first two months, Tracker continues to have excellent numbers and fights for leadership with its almost 8 thousand registered units.

Conclusion

Without the possibility of seeing who was the best in maintenance cost and sales, the duo Kardian and Tracker ended this duel with the same number of victories.

Renault’s new SUV was the best in terms of prices, taking advantage of the lower prices that every car has here when it is launched. Even so, these are really interesting values ​​for the segment and for a technological car.

It was also superior in terms of equipment, when we put versions with similar prices among rivals side by side.

Even though the Tracker makes up for it in the more expensive configurations, you will have a good dose of equipment if you opt for the Kardian, paying less for it.

On the other hand, the Chevrolet had the best performance when equipped with the 1.2 turbo engine. A curious detail is that these versions can be more economical than the Kardian, which has a 1.0 turbo engine.

Finally, the Tracker was also superior in terms of internal space, being a little more comfortable for its occupants.

The big difference is in the trunk, where it holds 35 liters more.
